The GNH Life Centre is a proposal by Glenboig Neighbourhood House to develop a centre within the community to provide much needed facilities to serve the growing population of the area.

Stage one Lottery funding has been granted by the Big Lottery Fund under their growing community assetts scheme.

A proposed site has been identified on the site of the former brickworks and fire clay mine within Glenboig Village Park.

The site has been chosen as it sits in the heart of the community, it will enhance the use of the Village Park and is easily accessible by foot and by car with ample space for carparking provision. The site will also offer views over the park.

Proposals have been drawn up by GCA Architecture+Design which were displayed at a public consultation event in the Village on 5th September. Over 100 locals of all ages turned up to view and comment on the the proposals which were on display.

Consultation Event

The proposals include the provision of a large function hall to cater for events such as social functions, conferences, drama and dance classes and performances. This will be linked to a community cafe and restaurant with a large kitchen which will provide teaching facilities. A separate and distinct youth area has been designed and incorporates ideas suggested by local young people that are needed within the area. A recording studio is also proposed to service an identified use in the community and surrounding areas and will help promote local talent. Multi-use meeting rooms that will cater for smaller events will be catered for also along with a retail area offering the community a building, catering for many needs which it is currently lacking.

Proposed Plan

The design of the building is influenced by the shape and form of the industrial buildings that once littered the site. A public external space is defined by a tower to be built from the famous Glenboig Brick. This would be a tribute to the industry that helped mould the community and it is proposed that the building will house a small exhibition of the industry that made Glenboig name well known throughout the world.
